Boots and Gloves – Lyrics by David LaMotte Comic Transcript
A brown boot sits as we see the following lyrics. Boot is a stoic character who’s been through a lot, seen a lot, but always turns up for the hard work and doesn’t take easy ways out.
The river took our shelter
And left us in the dark
But the river of compassion
Hit a higher water mark
If you’ve never really seen it
Here’s the power of real love
Hope is not the thing with feathers
It’s the thing with Boots and gloves.
Bunson Hoppydew (a little pink bunny, he likes dancing, friendship and cake) pops out from inside Boot.
Bunson: and bunnies can help too 

Boots and Gloves (Comic #776) – lyrics by David LaMotte

David LaMotte is a wonderful singer songwriter and social activist. I met him many years ago when he came out to the Australian National Folk Festival, and we’ve stayed in touch ever since. He was one of my first backers on Patreon and it’s a great pleasure to back him on Patreon.

Hanging out with David’s music, presence and the way he attends to the world is good for my parasympathetic nervous system and reminds me of ways I can be more present and create space.

Boots and Gloves was written by David in response to the terrible flooding and storms in the USA in November. The title was originally, “Not the Thing With Feathers” (inspired by the Emily Dickinson poem), but I really like the shift to talking about what hope is. Hope is a powerful thing, a powerful turning up and being present.

It’s relevant now as we see fires in California and as flood/storm effected people go through what can be the hardest part of recovery (there’s that initial surge of attention, but then it can go away, especially as the lasting impacts of water damage are less photogenic).

That’s why I’m publishing this comic a little bit early for everyone, rather than giving it to my patrons first and then giving others access. I’m sure my wonderful patrons won’t mind!

Speaking of patrons, thank you all and a special big extra thanks to Kate Webb, Erik Owomoyela, Stuart Barrow, Jesse the K, Brian Fies and Tracey Radford.

Thanks David LaMotte for your friendship and letting me use your lyrics!
