Communities of Practice (Comic #803)

I’m really feeling the beauty of the various communities I get to be a part of right now. What a gift it is to get to be part of things with people.

This comic is inspired by the Communities of practice blog post I created this weekend. I’m quite pleased with how it came out.

Thanks to all my patrons and a special big extra thanks to Kate Webb, Erik Owomoyela, Stuart Barrow, Jesse the K, Brian Fies and Jay Hedtke.

Good things,

Liz

Communities of Practice, cartoon transcript

If you want to do a thing.

Thing 1 looks sadly at a battered yellow hat.

Find the generous teachers, and more importantly the people also drawn to learning.

Thing 1 and 2 (wearing hats) look up a t a tall entity wearing a somewhat crown-ish hat)

Paper hat expert: In my travles I’ve explored many paper hat making cultures.

Communities of practice can become more than the craft.

Thing 1: I struggle with crisp folds.

Thing 2: Me too! I’ve been using a ruler, but I’m going to buy a bone folder.

Thing 1: Ooooh! What brand?

They can be a way to find people just as weird as you are.

Multiple folks wearing different hats, some more silly than others, smiling at each other.

I Like Trees

Our tree is a little small, so I had to tape the things onto it! To make these ornaments I had to buy crayons pencils and markers, all those things had been left behind when we moved to America. I think coloring in should be for folds of all ages. It isn’t wasted time, it’s useful meditation.

Festive Ornaments

When I was a kid my favorite ornaments were Richard Scary color it in yourself ornaments. Some were colored, some had a single line of crayon through them. they were paper cut outs with holes punched in them and ribbon, string or wire from bread bag attaching them to the tree. I love holidays as an excuse for crafts. There’s something special about learning how to make popcorn strings or fold crepe paper into streamers. There is a pleasure in making, mastering and being part of a communal effort that is seen. I made these ornaments for you, just print them out, color in, cut out and add string. If you do use any I’d love to see them. You can mention in the comments or send me an e-mail. I’ve printed out a copy for myself, but I have not yet colored mine in! The Things can be any color or pattern in the world (or non-world) so it’s hard to decide how to do it!

A Letter to the Children at St Baldricks

This comic/letter exists because one of the fabulous Uncanny Magazine Kickstarter Patrons. By supporting Uncanny David Buksbaum earned himself a pack of mini-comics, temporary tattoos, shrinky dinks and a letter from any of the characters in the Things. David decided to use his letter to send some good cheer to the kids at St Baldricks on behalf of himself and his daughter, Rachel. ^_^ Hooray for good peoples!

World Fantasy Con Sketch 2!

Folks who came by the SFWA table at WFC were offered free sketches. I drew this one for Karen Meisner. She asked for something with unicorn and moon. She had no idea I was working on a unicorn monkey sketch at the time! Hooray for Chuffles! I think Mayara and Chuffles will go on more adventures together.
